We offer pre-conception consultations with a specialist Fetal Medicine Consultant to discuss planning for a healthy pregnancy for the mother and the baby. Ideally, everyone should have a pre-conception consultation to discuss ways to optimise the health of the mother prior to conception, but in particular, pre-conception consultations and counselling is important for the following indications:
Those with advanced maternal age or those with high body mass index.
This includes a history of early miscarriage (< 14 weeks), late miscarriage (16-24 weeks) or a stillbirth (loss after 24 weeks)
This includes pregnancy problems such as preeclampsia (high blood pressure), diabetes in pregnancy, obstetric cholestasis (itching in pregnancy associated with liver disease), premature birth or those that have had a baby with growth restriction.
Mothers who have known history of medical conditions such as chronic or essential hypertension, diabetes mellitus, epilepsy, thyroid disorders, immunological conditions (such as rheumatoid arthritis or SLE) or gastrointestinal disorders (such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease).
In couples with a family history of a genetic condition such as cystic fibrosis, sickle cell disease, thalassemia or in those with a previous pregnancy or a child with a diagnosis of a genetic condition.
